The Literate Woman,
The Liberated Woman

Over and over, I meet women of all ages who are silent when confronted with their own self and experience.

But the literate woman is her own; she is liberated.

She is free from the tyranny of the crowd because can think for her Self; she decides who she wants to become, and why her becoming matters.

The literate woman does not wear the shackles of intellectual trends and fashions. She knows her own mind, and she has the verbal ability to express it in any situation with confidence and clarity. She knows how to value herself because she knows the power of her words.

The ability to be literate was denied to women—as it was denied to many other classes of people. Why? Because literacy trains the mind for freedom. Women are, and have been, denied the right to their freedom by denying their right to literacy.

Our schools and universities may teach reading and writing, but they do not teach deep literacy, nor do MFA’s, because they do not grasp that writing is simply the more permanent form of our thinking and speaking, the key power all elite education has always sought to instill. The deeply literate woman’s thoughts and speaking are informed, authentic, and full of her own flair.

A woman’s power in the Cyber Age is rooted in deep literacy, the power to know who she is and tell her truth at any moment and in any media—spoken or written, professionally or personally—on a webpage or in a boardroom. The root of human power is language.

Deep literacy is a style, a way of being, a way of life—a way of being human.

Testimony

“The Writing College not only taught me how to write, it taught me how to think about who I am in the world by learning to see people and situations around me using writing and editing as life skills.”

- Julie, HS Senior ’22

“I struggled with hearing my own voice as a young woman, but The Writing College helped me find it. Alex would often say things like: This is good, but general, anyone could write this argument, especially AI! She helped me develop my distinct writing personality and identify what I think and who I am as a person.”

- Kylie, HS Sophomore

“Our first session went so well, and Alex made me feel entirely at ease and had the perfect comments and questions to prompt me to deeper and more powerful observations of my own heart and mind.

She highlighted key moments of breakthrough in my thoughts and speech patterns, and I gained invaluable perspective from her real-time “verbal-drafting-and-editing” method.

The philosophical tools and techniques she used helped me access the truth, and express what felt unsayable. Thoughts came out that I didn't even realize I had or felt, and she gave me space to process and work through them.

I've learned so much about myself and have been given so many new, rich methods for cultivating my mind and emotions in such a short period of time. My growth is absolutely the result of TWC philosophy and the language skills TWC teaches to experience profound transformation.”
